The best New Years Resolutions are usually the ones that you can achieve.

Lose ten kilos in two weeks? Unlikely.

Eat a strict vegan, paleo diet with no sugar for the rest of your life? Well, maybe if you have extraordinary will power, but for us mere mortals, again, unlikely.

Go to the gym every day for the next year? Perhaps, but for most of us, that gym membership often gets used for a month and then falls by the wayside.

So how about this year, make some News Years Resolutions that you can easily keep?

And this is where massage comes in. Because not only is it easy to keep (and I’ll get to that later) but it is one of the healthiest things you can do for your body.

So, drum roll – the top four reasons why regular massages should be your top New Year’s Resolution.

1. A Massage Is The Best Way To Reduce Stress

Stress is like that super villain the lurks in the back of our lives and undermines any positive health changes you make in your life.

If you are an emotional eater, stress can quickly undermine your resolution to eat healthy food. Suddenly, you find yourself turning to a Big Mac (or your junk food drug of choice) to try to offset your cranky kids drawing on the walls.

Stress also shortens the telomeres in your DNA.

Your what? Your telomeres.

These are the little bit of protective coating at the end of your DNA strands, kind of like Wonder Woman’s shield protecting you against ageing.

Those telomeres shorten when you become chronically stressed, inflammation is then caused, and you age faster.

Stress also can cause you to have insomnia and sleep badly.

A lack of sleep also has been shown to be linked to increase weight loss.

So now, you not only feel tired and stressed, but you also find it more difficult to lose any extra weight. Which leads you to be more stressed and perhaps emotionally eat. This creates a perfect storm of stress and poor health. Fun huh?

Plus. stress just feels, well, not nice. It feels like wearing a pair of jeans two sizes too small – you feel uncomfortable and it can be hard to breathe.

No one likes to feel under pressure all the time, constantly worried about things you have to do (or not do).

It causes anxiety and depression, and generally there is very little upside.

So, this New Year, why not put reducing stress as one of your most important resolutions?

It can lead to eating better, weight loss, better sleep, better moods. It will certainly flow through to your family and friends (cause no doubt, if you are stressed, they will have noticed and picked up on that energy).

Fortunately, there is a very easy and enjoyable way to reduce your stress levels, and that is with, you guessed it, massage.

Massage is one of the best ways to reduce cortisol in your body, which is the stress hormone. Not only that, there is a double bonus of it increasing dopamine and serotonin, the feel-good hormones your body produces.

Wanna get a quick high the natural way? Ditch the alcohol, the weed, the shopping addiction, whatever it is, getting a good massage is a short cut to feeling good. Its why we often see our clients slide off our massage tables with that dreamy look on their face.

Or even fall asleep (and no, we don’t mind if you snore, we kinda take it as a compliment).

2. Your Skin Will Love A Massage

Your skin is the largest organ of you body, around 20 square feet , which is around the size of a kitchen cupboard.

Unless you are Nigella Lawson, but for the average Joe that is usually pretty big.

Anyway, this makes the skin a big deal, as well as being your body’s protection against the outside world.

So, it makes sense to look after it. A massage benefits your skin in so many ways.

The oils that are used in a massage also moisturize the skin. It increases blood flow around the body which brings nutrients and oxygen to the skin.

If you get an exfoliation at the same time, this will not only gently remove old, dead skin cells and make way for new ones, but it will also stimulate the lymphatic system, helping your body remove excess fluids and toxins from your lymph system.

As it reduces stress, it is far more effective than Botox or expensive creams at reducing those worry lines on your forehead.

3. Why A Massage Is Great For A Headache

There can be any number of reasons why your brain seizes up and you get a headache.

If its because you have been partying over the holidays and its from too much booze, then a massage possibly won’t help.

Instead, lots of water, sleep and vitamins might be more helpful.

But sometimes headaches are from stress, in which case see point 1. Or sometimes the muscles in your back seize up, and the pain is referred up your neck to your head.

So whilst you can be buckled over with a migraine, the problem maybe a seized angry muscle knot in your back.

Massage, especially trigger point massage, is sensational for loosening these muscle seizures and help lessen any pain they may have been causing.

So instead of just reaching for the Panadol, or hiding under the covers, if you get regular headaches, book a massage.

4. Massages Make Exercise More Enjoyable

Perhaps the most popular New Years Resolution, after losing those extra kilos, is to exercise more.

Now if you are a gym junkie or regularly get out and about, then upping the amount of exercise you do won’t be a big shock to your body.

However, if your body has been MIA from the exercise scene, then starting to exercise again can make your body feel like its done ten rounds with Mike Tyson.

And if your body aches and feels too uncomfortable, the chances of you keeping up your exercise routine are about as likely as it snowing in the Sahara. Yup, buckleys. time
