Chrissy and Margie had hands of magic and all recipients loved the remedial massages that were received.

Mine was absolute bliss and for the first time I was able to easily turn my head without pain.

My friend said she wishes that she were able to have Margie’s number on speed dial. Lovely and heavenly spring to mind.

Thank you.

What Is
Remedial Massage Therapy?

Remedial massage is a deep tissue style massage, that is therapeutic in nature. It is designed to heal specific health issues, muscle problems and injuries.

Remedial massage therapists believe that everything in your body is connected and related. If one part is injured it will in turn affect the rest of your body

If you have an injured knee, you may then favour the other leg which will throw out the muscles in the hip and lead to your back aching.

The tightening of these muscles may then cause an imbalance affecting your neck muscles which may then give you a headache.

So if you go to see a remedial therapist and you complain of persistent headaches, the main cause of this might be a knee injury!

Before your treatment the therapist will consult with you. Sometimes this will include stretches or tests to see your range of movement. It may include looking at your posture or palpitating the muscles to see how they move. They will talk to you generally about how your body feels and moves.

Our remedial therapists will not only diagnose what is causing the problem but will treat it with various remedial techniques.

Benefits of Remedial Massage

  1. Pain Relief: One of the primary benefits of remedial massage is its ability to alleviate pain. It targets muscle knots, tension, and trigger points, which are common sources of discomfort for many individuals. By applying various techniques, such as deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy, remedial massage helps release muscle tension and reduce pain.

  2. Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion: Muscular tension and adhesions can limit the range of motion in joints. Remedial massage works on breaking down these adhesions and stretching the muscles, resulting in improved flexibility and increased range of motion.

  3. Enhanced Blood Circulation: The therapeutic pressure applied during a remedial massage session stimulates blood flow, which helps deliver essential nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and tissues. This increased circulation not only aids in muscle recovery but also promotes general well-being.

  4. Injury Rehabilitation: Remedial massage plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process for individuals recovering from sports injuries or accidents. By targeting the affected areas, this massage technique helps in reducing scar tissue, promoting tissue repair, and speeding up the recovery process.

  5. Stress Reduction: While remedial massage primarily focuses on treating physical issues, it also offers psychological benefits. The soothing and relaxing nature of the massage helps reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and overall well-being.

Remedial Massage Techniques

Our remedial massage therapists use a variety of techniques to soften, stretch and manipulate your muscles so that they will start to work as they should again. These techniques include trigger point therapy.

Trigger points are small, highly contracted areas of the muscle and the therapist will manipulate these regions to release them.

Trigger points are often a large source of pain, and releasing them can cause relief from tension and hurt. Sometimes trigger points cause referred pain.

So a trigger point maybe located in your shoulder but the pain maybe referred by the muscle to another region in your back. Remedial massage therapists are trained to diagnose referred pain and also treat the underlying cause.

This style of massage also uses a wide range of other techniques like deep tissue friction that warms and releases the muscle. They also use relaxation massage strokes that soothe the muscles after the deep tissue work  and stretching.

Other techniques include

  1. Myofascial Release: This technique aims to stretch and release the fascia, the connective tissue that covers muscles and organs. By releasing tension in the fascia, myofascial release helps improve flexibility and reduce pain.

  2. Muscle Energy Technique (MET): MET involves the active contraction of specific muscles against resistance from the therapist. This technique helps improve joint mobility, flexibility, and muscle strength.

  3. Stretching: Incorporating stretching into remedial massage sessions helps improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall mobility.

We may get you to do follow up exercises and stretches at home to continue the work.

Our therapists are qualified to deal with issues such as arthritis, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, muscular injuries from sport. We also help neck and back pain, headaches and whiplash

Where We Found It

“My shoulders were sore from back packing and staying in really uncomfortable hostel beds.

I was 17, doing the Oz overseas trek and my body was complaining.

Deciding to wander around Covent Garden and watch the buskers, I spied a small place offering remedial massage.

Never having had a massage before, let alone a deep tissue one, I didn’t know what I was letting myself in for.

But one hour later was converted, an instant massage addict, and a back that was a lot happier.

Since then I have had remedial massages in many countries and all sorts of styles; Tui Na, Balinese, you name it and I’ve probably had it.

I love the deep tissue work and the release of the muscles and that feeling when I walk out of oh so this is how my body is supposed to feel.”  Ali

Tips To Make The Most
Of Your Remedial Massage

Stiff shoulder? Seized up neck? Sore back? Relaxation massage can be a great style of massage if you are wanting to relax and de-stress, but to fix muscular problems you probably need a remedial massage.

In Australia, remedial massage therapists do extra training to obtain a diploma in massage.

Ripple has remedial therapists in all of our regions.

Here are some of our favourite remedial massage tips.

  • Have a hot bath with Epsom salts before we arrive to start relaxing and warming the muscles.

  • Another way to heat up the muscles is with a wheat heat pack or hot water bottle. Apply to the area both before and after the massage to encourage healing.

  • Try to do some stretches in the days after your massage. Your therapist will be able to help you with suggestions on what stretches are best.

  • Rest after your massage –  schedule in some time to just relax and let your body restore.

  • Your body maybe a little sore after the massage. If you haven’t had a massage for a while and the therapist has done some really deep tissue work it maybe sore for a few days. Take it easy and schedule in some downtime.

  • Get regular massages – One massage often won’t fix the problem, and usually you will need a few a week or two apart to help fix the muscular problem.

  • Ripple is a mobile service, and sometimes this can be really convenient, especially if your neck is stiff. We can come to you throughout many regions in Australia

Frequently Asked Questions
On Remedial Massage

What is the difference between a relaxation style massage and a remedial massage?

A relaxation massage will often use more flowing, effleurage techniques, will be softer in pressure, and the intention will be to reduce stress, and provide a calm, slow, rhythmic massage.

A remedial massage however is often stronger and firmer, has a particular therapeutic goal in mind (like relieving sciatica or migraines), will utilise trigger point therapy, can be more intense and painful, often involves stretches. You may also be assigned stretches and exercises to do at home after your massage. Remedial massages are rarely a one off massage, often you will go for a series to fix a particular muscular problem. It is more clinical in nature, and requires more extensive clinical training by the therapist.

It is possible to mix both relaxation and remedial massage techniques into the one massage. For example, some clients may ask for remedial work on their back neck and shoulders, but more relaxation for the rest of the body. Please let you therapist know before they start on what you would like from your massage that day.

I have a lot of lower back pain, would a remedial massage help?

Yes, there is a lot of ways a remedial massage can help with lower back pain. It can help relieve sciatica by releasing the piriformis nerve. By deep massage of the lower back, particularly the lower erector spinae muscles, lower back pain can diminish. Trigger point therapy also helps unlock tightened muscles in the back.

How many remedial massage sessions will I need to fix my problem?

This varies depending on the severity of the problem, how chronic it is, if you are receiving other treatments to help with it (eg chiropractic) and also if you follow the exercises and stretches the therapist will give you to do at home. Your therapist will do a series of tests before the first treatment to work out your range of movement and pinpoint the problem, and will be able to give you a rough idea of how many massages you may need to book. Remedial massage is rarely a one off treatment, they are often done in a series.

Is a remedial massage safe? How do I choose a therapist?

Yes, remedial massage is safe if done by an experienced, professional massage therapist that has a Diploma Of Remedial Massage. Certificate IV qualifications in massage are not enough for a therapist to do a remedial massage, so look for a therapist that has the higher qualification. A good therapist will do a full analysis and consult before beginning any massage, to find out what the problem is, your medical history and other information so they can safely and effectively treat you. Often you will be referred to a massage therapist by another professional, such as a GP or chiropractor.

There are lots of ways to choose a therapist that suits you. Some are outlined here.

Does it hurt? How will I feel after a remedial massage?

Remedial massage can hurt, especially if trigger point therapy is being used. This is done ot release the muscles by pressing in deeply on the trigger point so it releases. This can be intense, and can be painful. If it is too intense, please let your therapist know. Also if you have chronic pain in a particular part of your body, or something like frozen shoulder, the deep tissue work can hurt some. For example, really tight rhomboid muscles under the scapula are often released by stretching out the shoulder blade. This can feel sore, but is often more effective than just massaging this area alone.

After your massage, you may feel quite tired, a little sore, and not like doing much at all. Please schedule some down time after your massage to give yourself time to readjust. Often a hot shower or magnesium bath feels really good after remedial bodywork. Be kind to your body and do all the good things; drink more water, have a healthy meal, rest. If you feel sore, heat packs are a great way to relieve any pain.
