Where we found it: Mount Tamborine Markets
I love going to the local markets on a Sunday.
Not only because it has a wicked sausage sizzle, but I love that everything there is pretty much hand made.
So imagine the buzz I got last year when tucked in amongst all the normal stalls there was a new one …
with lush hand made soaps chock full of essential oils …
and a beaming lady behind the display.
Now Kaye (the beaming lady) is one of those people in life that just light up when you talk about something she loves… and she LOVES (yes in capitals) her soaps.
Actually, just quietly between you and me, she is obsessed with them, the kind of obsession some of my friends have when they have a new boyfriend.
In that first conversation, of over an hour, she loving picked each one up and explained why it was so beautiful, and made me smell and hold them.
She told me how she uses the best essential oils, natural coloring, the added rich oils she adds so they moisturize as well as clean and …
well the list goes on.
So I just had to bring them into Ripple. Kaye now makes and supplies a range of soaps that are exclusive to Ripple.
Handmade soap is one of the best investments in money and time that you can make. At Ripple we are proud to use soaps that are homemade and rich in natural products.
Here are the top 5 reasons why you should start using homemade soap
#1 reason to use homemade soap: You can bulk make the soap ingredients, saving you money
The ingredients used in making soap is usually bought in bulk, and once you have made your soaps, you will find for the price you pay for a pack of soaps, you will have many more times the amount of homemade soap.
#2 reason to use homemade soap: You can control what ingredients are going into your homemade soap
A lot of the time you don’t know or you can’t understand that ingredients that go into your every day soaps. If you can’t pronounce it, then why should we put in on our skin? With homemade soap you know every ingredient that you are putting on your skin, which is especially great for people with allergies.
#3 reason to use homemade soap: You can make up any fragrant homemade soap that you like!
I don’t know about you, but I can never find the fragrance that I want for my soaps. I love a strong wintery smell like cinnamon, caramel, nutmeg and ginger, and I can never find anything that meets my needs. If you make homemade soap you can control the scent as well as the intensity, making sure you get the exact fragrance that you want every time!
#4 reason to use homemade soap: You gift your left over soaps as gifts
If you have a bunch of left over homemade soap you can always do up some gift boxes in anticipation for the next birthday or event. Homemade gifts are always lovely to receive and it means a lot of thought and effort was put in!
#5 reason to use homemade soap: It’s a fun, creative activity
If you have a creative bone like me, then this activity is great to get my creative juices flowing. Imagine all the designs, shapes, colours and scents that you could come up with. If you have kids at home, you could always make this an activity that you can do together (together, because there is heat involved).
I would love to share with you a couple of recipes for making your own homemade soap. The fragrances are up you to choose, but these are some of my favourite, and offer you some good base ideas for your soap, as there are many to choose from.
Coconut Oil Handmade Soap
One of the greatest ingredients for your skin and is a big trend at the moment is coconut oil. It has great properties to heal skin as well as moisturise it.
230g Coconut Oil
460g Olive Oil
230g Palm Oil
Mix up your lye solution (follow product instructions) and let cool. Heat up solid oils and then add in liquid oils. Add lye and oils together once and blend until it reaches trace. Add fragrance and pour into moulds. Let cool for 24hrs. Ideally leave for 2 weeks before using so it can set properly.
If this is too difficult for you to, or get hold of ingredients, you can always buy soap base online or at craft stores and add in your own ingredients and fragrances. This will certainly still give you that homemade soap result. You could always add in oats or grains once the oils have cooled down to give yourself a more exfoliating homemade soap bar!
